System Mechanic 9.5

VERDICT: One of the best PC tools you can invest your money

There could be a number of reasons that could have brought your once super responsive PC to a snails pace. Reasons could be many, such as a fragmented partition, increase in the number of junk files or even a fragmented registry. There are a number of tools that promise to inject life into your system by defragging the necessary files and cleaning up unwanted junk from your system. The question is “Are they reliable and efficient enough to be installed?” Secondly, how many programs are you personally going to install to keep your machine up and running?

System Mechanic on the other hand offers all of these and much more.

The new System Mechanic v9 brings the much need change that most of us have been looking for. Installation is a breeze which hardly requires user intervention. You will need an Internet connection to validate the key to be able to proceed with the installation. The interface is slick and displays only what is of importance, such as the PC’s health, security and overall status. The user is given the option to either perform a quick scan or a deep scan. However, you may choose to resolve the problem automatically or you can view and rectify the problems yourself. Issues can also be hidden for a given period or you can choose to completely hide it from appearing again, which obviously can be undone from the Options menu. The addition of a jump list provides direct access to important tasks thereby eliminating the need to hunt for them within the programs feature rich interface. Another added feature is the PC Health Status Gadget added to the desktop that provides real-time feedback of the overall health status. You can analyse, repair and view the list of problems relating to your computer all via the Status Gadget. The only discrepancy we have with this added feature is the pop up of the application when analyzing or cleaning. A more flawless approach would have been to include it as a background process rather than bringing up the main program.

The application also allows you to automate certain tasks or all tasks displayed under ActiveCare. Tasks include cleaning up of system clutter to repairing registry errors to reclaiming valuable memory and much more. In total there are eleven different tasks that can be automated thereby eliminating the need to perform certain tasks manually. Moreover the simplicity of enabling or disabling them is where a product like System Mechanic stands out. Just like Windows Vista or Windows 7 security feature the application is designed to alert the user in case an Anti-malware or an AntiVirus (as some of us call it) program is not detected. The same applies to the Firewall but without the nagging pop ups. An added feature is the SafetyNet option which allows you to undo selected System Mechanic action

The Toolbox on the other hand contains a one stop solution that combines alldiagnostic, repair, cleanup and security tools. You can either choose the all-in-one solution which basically does a run down of all important features in one single click or you can choose to run these tools individually. Take a closer look and you’ll find a few good options such as a System Guard, File Incinerator and options for creating a recovery CD in case the OS fails to start. The only minor drawback we could find in this otherwise fine tool was its defragmenter. In other words, it does a decent job but doesn’t quite match up to other well known defrag tools.
