How to do a high Quality DivX rip

How to do a high Quality DivX rip First and foremost, go to http://www.doom9.org and go to their downloads section. get the following files: under Audio: Besweet Besweet GUI Under Codecs: DivX 5.2.1 Pro Under Divx/Mpeg-4 encoders: Nandub 1.0RC2 then get this: http://www.dvd-digest.tv/downloads/files/virtualdub/vdub_pack-145.exe alternatively, get any version of virtualdub that includes mp3 support. these are all the required tools, there are ways with fewer items, but they produce very inferior outputs. Besides, after you get used to it, the whole process is really easy. Okay, first and foremost, pull out Nandub. This is the step that takes the longest, as well as where you will make most of your decisions. I am going to assume that you are making a 1 cd rip. If you do what is in this faq, there won't be much reason to do anything else. Twisted Evil First of all, run Nandub . It will pop up a dialogue box, and want to know if you are making a new project or resuming an old. New, of course. Give it a name and tell fairuse where you want it to store its data. Fairuse is about to rip the entire movie to your harddrive(nice if you want to go rent a movie and return it the next day). Then it will ask for your DVD drive with a dvd in it. give it. Then, select which video stream you want. This is usually pretty obvious as the movie stream is the one that is an hour or so long. If there are two of these, check out the other tags. which languages and so on. worst case senario is that you have to trial and error. but that is rare. choose the long stream and hit next. This is where Nandub rips everything to your hard drive. depending on the speed of various components in your computer, and the length of the movie, this could take a while. let it finish. and then move on. Once all that is done, the really important screen pops up. this is where you set resolutions and video length. first, cut off the ending credits with the slider, but DO NOT mess with the beginning, as the sound and video frames need to start at the same point for sync. Then hit auto set for the cropping region, this is usually just fine. Then decide whether or not you want subtitles, which would be the subpicture stream. When you're done, hit next. Set the field mode to IVTC. This will give you better quality for size, as it runs at 24 frames instead of 30, due to the nature of divx, there won't be any noticeable difference in quality, but 6 less frames to deal with each second(and to store data for) really add up. Besides this is the correct mode for all movies anyway. NExt. This is where you set FINAL file size, including audio, for 1 cd rip, set to 690, for 2, set to double that. Then follow the directions they give you and choose a final resolution that has between a 120:1 and 150:1 (if possible, sometimes the movie is compression ratio. NEXT! This screen is where you determine quality. The autoadd button is usefull, and will give you decent quality, with 4 encodings. What this does is encode the movie 4 times, and then mix the frames to creat the final encoding, with the most efficient possible encoding for each frame. which is how we get bad ass quality for a single cd. I usually go for 8 encodings, as on my athlon 1600+ this rarely takes more than 8 hours to do, so I just go to sleep, wake up, and its done. Then add the audio encoding that you want. Hit next. And let the bastard fly. Depending on what you set, and your computer, this could take from a few hours to a few days. CPU's of 1.2Ghz+ are nice right about here. You can do stuff while this is going on, but it makes things take much longer. In the end you will have a bunch of encodings in the folder you specified at the beginning, the 4+ you chose and the final. You will also have an AC3 stream. Take the final AVI and toss it someplace to await the rest of the audio work you have to do, and you can erase the other encodings, freeing up a few gigs in the process of space. NEXT: AUDIO Ok, this is where Besweet comes in. Extract BeSweet and the GUI into the same folder. Now Run the GUI. At the top there are three fields. One for BeSweet which you should point at the besweet.exe that you should have unzipped to the same directory you are running the Gui from, A field for the AC3 stream, which is in the folder where you sent the encoded video from Fairuse, and an output mp3. The output mp3 has to be an existing file, so make a text file, rename it (yourmovie).mp3 and just say yeah, its cool to change the extension and make things weird. besweet will overwrite it so don't worry. point the third field at that file. The default values for stuff should be fine. but to make sure go to Azid 1(on the left) and select stereo, and then go to Lame 2 and select constant bit rate, and 128(assuming that is what you want). then click on besweet again, and finally, click on AC3 to MP3. Let the bastard fly. Now. When its done you should have an mp3 that is the entire soundtrack for the movie. This is where virtualdub comes in. run the virtualdub mp3 version. go to File:open video file and select the final encoding that you had from way back. Then go to audio and select mp3 audio. it will ask you for the file, give it the mp3. Go to audio again and make sure direct stream copy is selected. Then go to video and make sure that direct stream copy is also selected. Finally go to file again and SAVE AVI. give it a file name and let the bastard fly. This final file is your movie. Beautiful and glorious. Congratulations, its a DivX rip. Aren't you proud. burn to cd, and give copies to all your friends. Note: These is a RIP

Then go to the forum and click on "peer2mail related websites". here is the direct link (may not work) http://www.peer2mail.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=13 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Here u are now u should be an expert on peer2mail!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peer2Mail is the first software that let you store and share files on any web-mail account. If you have a web mail account with large storage space, you can use P2M to store files on it. Web-mail providers such as Gmail (Google Mail), Walla!, Yahoo and more, provide storage space that ranges from 100MB to 3GB. P2M splits the file you want to share/store zips and encrypts it. P2M then sends the file segments one by one to your account. Once P2M uploaded all file segments, you can download them and use P2M to merge the segments back to the original file. Sending a File In order to send a file to an email account, Peer2Mail needs to split it into segments. Web-mail providers limit the size of an email attachment usually to a nominal 10Megs, but due to the size increase resulting from transport encodings, the limit works out to be a few MB less (Usually 7MB). Use the following dialog to prepare the file before sending: * File Name - The file/s you want to send. You can use the Browse button to select a single or multiple files. * Mail To - The recipients who will receive the file (Web-mail account). When using Direct Send you may enter only one email address. If you are sending Via MAPI then you can enter as many recipients as you like; Use the Recipients button to easily add email address separated by semi colon (icon_wink.gif. * Optional Encryption Password - P2M automatically encrypts each segment to protect you privacy, however you can set a password (key) for the encryption to maximize the privacy. You will need this password when you merge the segments back. * Segment Size - P2M splits the file into segments. Here you can determine the segment size, most of the web-mail providers limit the attachment size to a nominal 10Megs, but due to the size increase resulting from transport encodings, the limit works out to be a few MB less (Usually 7MB). It is recommended to test your web-mail provider for the size of an attachment it can receive. Send Method - o Direct Send - P2M has a built in SMTP component that sends the segments directly to the web-mail providers. You don't need to enter your ISP details in order to use P2M. If you are using this feature please make sure you enter a value in the 'From Email Address' because some web-mail providers reject email messages where there is no 'From' address. You can even enter a fake mail address. o Send Via MAPI - P2M can send the segments using MAPI (Usually your outlook client). When you use this option P2M will split the files and move the sending responsibility to Outlook. Note that it will use your ISP SMTP server and details to send the files. You may enter as many recipients as you wish when using this option. o Send Via SMTP Server - Send the segments using your ISP SMTP Server. If you are using this feature please make sure you enter a value in the 'From Email Address' because some web-mail providers reject email messages where there is no 'From' address. You can even enter a fake mail address. You may enter as many recipients as you wish when using this option. * From Email Address - This is the source address of the mail. This address doesn't have to be valid, although sometimes web-mail providers reject emails where the domain part of the address isn't valid. Image Once you are done, click on the Ok button. You can now choose if you want P2M to send all the segments or only specific few by checking/un-checking the checkboxes. Once you are ready, click on the Send button. It may take a few hours to complete the operation depending on the file size and your internet connection. Note: If you are using an antivirus program that scans outgoing mail, it is recommended to disable this feature since it takes a long time for each segment to be scanned. Plain Transfer In case you don't want Peer2Mail to split, zip and encrypt your files, and just want to send the files "as is" then you can use Plain Transfer. This option isn't secure. P2M just sends the file as an email attachment and some web mail providers might even block it. Choose Plain Transfer from the drop down button: Image. Once you are done filling the details as described above, click on the Ok button. Once you are ready, click on the Send button. Note: If you are using an antivirus program that scans outgoing mail, it is recommended to disable this feature since it takes a long time for each segment to be scanned. Downloading the Segments P2M includes a built in browser so you can easily log into your web-mail account. Before you can merge the segments you need to download them. It is important that you will save all the segments into the same folder. The first segment name ends with the P2M extension and the rest follow with a serial number 001...00x. Auto Download Peer2Mail can automatically list and download files from web-mail accounts. Currently P2M supports auto-download from Gmail, Walla, Yahoo, Spymac, Unitedemailsystems, Xasamail, Gawab, Hriders and Omnilect. To use this feature, login to your account and click on the green download button (Image). P2M will then list the segments (may take a few minutes) and at any time you can tell P2M what segment to download by clicking on the checkboxes that appear next to them. Click on the Download button to begin downloading the selected segments. If you checked the Auto Merge checkbox then Peer2Mail will automatically merge the segments once the download process is done Image The listing process can be a bit slow since P2M scans the mail account and gathers information about each attachment. Sometimes a server doesn't reply to a request so P2M might skip it. To fix that, once the listing process is over, click on the refresh button and P2M will re-index only the segments it didn't already list. P2M scans for segments only in the inbox for Yahoo, Walla, Spymac, Unitedemailsystems, Xasamailand, Gawab, Hriders, Omnilect, and on all folders with Gmail. Merging the Segments Once you completed downloading all the segments, use P2M to merge it back to the original file. Choose the folder you want the file to be saved in and click on the Merge button. The Merge dialog: # P2M File/s - use the Browse button to select the first segment of the file you wish to merge. The first segment extension is P2M. # Decryption Password - If you used a password when you sent the file to your account, you must enter it now in order to merge it back. Incorrect password will result in a failure to merge the segments.

how to make a vcd from a dvix

Tools required: Latest Virtual dub, TMPGEnc and Nero ( and the DivX codecs.) Preparing: Download all tools, Be sure to install DivX 3.11 DivX4 and the latest DivX5 codecs. Extracting the audio : Start Virtualdub. Open your video File->Open video file.(if you get any warnings just ignore them because you won't edit the video just extract the audio) Select File->File Information and note the fps as the video source fps because you will need it later. Select under Audio->Full processing mode. Select Audio->Compression and select Select Audio->Conversion. Change the the Sampling rate to 44100Hz if you are going to make VCD or SVCD MPEGs. Save the wav by clicking on File->Save WAV...the wav will be a huge audio uncompressed video file(about 10 MB/minute. Encoding: Start TMPEnc. Press cancel if the Project Wizard comes. Press Browse… and select the DivX file as Video source input. Now you press the Browse button for choosing the Audio source input and use the saved wav file. Press load and load the file which in the Template directory of TMPGenc. If the video source fps is 29,970 load VideoCD (NTSC).mcf If the video source fps is 23,970 load VideoCD (NTSCFilm).mcf If the video source fps is 25,000 load VideoCD (PAL).mcf If the video source fps is anything else else just load NTSC if you live in US or Japan and PAL if you live anywhere else. Note if you live in US or Japan and get problem playing PAL, often causing black and white TV playback problems, then first check if you can change to PAL on your TV or DVD Player if not then instead convert it to NTSC by loading the VideoCD(NTSC) template. Note if you live Europe and the rest of the world and get problem playing NTSC or NTSCFilm, often causing black and white TV playback problems, then first check if you can change to PAL on your TV or DVD Player if not convert it to PAL by loading the VideoCD(Pal) template. Press Settings and choose Advanced. Select Full screen (keep aspect ratio) under Video arrange method to keep the same aspect ratio(widescreen, fullscreen) as the video source(if you have a widescreen movie and you want it to be in fullscreen select No margin(keep aspect ratio). Select Source range and double-click on it with the mouse. In the next dialog you can choose the source range. This process depends on the DivX file. If the DivX file is less than 80min (for a 80min/700mb CDR) then you do not have to split the file to two CDs. Also if the DivX file is already in two parts you have just to convert the first file and then the second. But if there should be the case that the movie is in one file over 80minutes long then it is necessary to select the source range. In this new dialog you put the horizontal scrollbar to the middle of the selection so that you will get the same length on the first CD as on the second. After you selected the middle do you have press Set end frame. A new value should be under End Frame. This value you should notice somewhere for the encoding of the second part. Of course the start frame must be 0. After pressing ok, you only have to select the output file name. I prefer the movie name with the CD number (e.g. Ghost in the Shell CD1) for the burning. Now encode the file by pressing the Start-Button. While encoding you can select File->Preview(it won't effect the encoding) to see how the output will be, it it looks wrong(widescreen or fullscreen) you can stop the encoding and start over and change especially the Settings->Advanced->Video arange method.) If you only want to burn the movie on one CD jump to the burning guide else follow the next points. Repeat the third, forth and fifth point. In the source range dialog you now use as Start frame the noticed value and move with the horizontal scrollbar to the end of the movie. After pressing Set end frame, press two times OK. Now select the output filename for the second file. (e.g. Ghost in the Shell CD2) and encode it. After the encoding is done and you did all right, you should have for every CD a file. Burning: Launch Nero.Close the Wizard. Select File->New. 1. Select VideoCD 2. Select PAL or NTSC depending what format your source MPEG is in. 3. And hit New. 1. Locate your .mpg and drag it(see picture below). Remember that you can add several .mpgs also, each mpg will be a own track on the VCD and you can add data files also, just drag them to any folder. 2. Check the time. It should be the same as in the movie. 3. Rename the CD to anything you like by clicking F2 on NEW. 4. Select File->Write CD. don't know about everyone else.. but the only options i choose on tmpgenc to make mpeg-1 files are either NTSC film 23.976, or NTSC video 29.97 fps.. i also live in the u.s. so i do all of mine accordingly.. why do you save the wave file with virtual dub.. or should i say, why do you even process the divx file with vdub.. yeah if it is your last resort and the divx for some reason doesn't open in tmpgenc.. i've got 180+ Divx movies, some downloaded mostly ripped, never had a problem encoding them with tmpgenc plus. just seems like you are going from your a$$ to your elbow to do this. 1. take divx movie (120 minutes long for example).. open with vdub.. find a keyframe about halfway through the film, preferrably at a scene change. choose "SET SELECTION START" from the EDIT menu.. scroll all the way to the end of the film, choose "SET SELECTION END"... hit DELETE or choose "DELETE SELECTION", all from the EDIT menu 2. Now you have 1 half of your movie. under the VIDEO menu, choose "DIRECT STREAM COPY", also make sure that under AUDIO is going to generate a "DIRECT STREAAM COPY". Then go to FILE and choose "SAVE as AVI..." on a newer computer this will take less than 2 minutes.. 3. When it is complete, the quickest way to proceed is to just click on FILE / "OPEN VIDEO FILE". at the beginning of the clip, choose "SET SELECTION START" again, snap back to the keyframe (half way through the film) which you cut half the film off at and choose "SET SELECTION END". DELETE... FILE / "SAVE AS AVI..." save as the other half of film.. once again, will usually take less than 2 minutes... 4. choose option accordingly, this next part can be important.. (i'm going to give the rest of the instructions as if you were making ntsc movie) since you want to make a standard mpeg-1 file, choose NTSC FILM or NTSC VIDEO.. BROWSE for your file, then hit NEXT, then it OTHER SETTINGS / ADVANCED tab ... now there is an option that says "VIDEO ARRANGE METHOD".. if you are making a fullscreen movie, lleave on FULLSCREEN.. if you are encoding a widescreen movie, choose "FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO).. OK / NEXT / NEXT (you get the point) basically takes 1 step out of the tutorial above.. the instructions for nero appear to be correct.. but here's another tip.. dvd burners are becoming more and more popular and even i got one now, like many of you do. tired of old vcd's or wanna encode a VCD standard DVD with nearly 9 hours of video (but same quality as normal 80 minute VCD), if this is the case, make sure you encode your DivX files as "NTSC VIDEO 29.97 FPS".. even if source is 23 fps... and once you have 3 or 4 movies, get yourself a proggy called TMPGENC DVD AUTHOR.. make a track for each movie.. and you got yourself a dvd with 3 or 4 average length movies on 1 dvd (with menus if you like) that is WAY MORE COMPATIBLE than a VCD.. do a search for the keyword VCD-DVD and i posted a more descriptive tutorial on how to do this..

Press “Alt+A” or click the black “A” on the LEFT PANEL with what looks like to me is a half-halo with an arrow tip!? Anyway, here is a quick rundown on what the options here do: (BY THE WAY TO ACTIVATE OR “PREVIEW ANIMATION” PRESS “Ctrl+spacebar”). user posted image A. Frames per cycle: This is the number of frames for each complete cycle through the animation sequence. The greater the number of frames the smoother the animation. The drawback is that the file is bigger - this is a big disadvantage for web graphics. You may need to try different values to get the best results. B. Frames per second: The animation speed. Slow speeds can give jerky movement. High speeds can also give jerky movement as the program displaying the animation may not be able to keep up. Again you may need to try different values. C. Pause: This pauses the first frame before continuing the rest of the animation. Type in a value in centiseconds (1/100ths of a second) - a 2 second pause is 200 cs. Note that this applies only to the first frame; use Frames per cycle and Frames per second to control the overall speed of the animation. D. Loop Value: Unchecked is Infinite, Any other value see for yourself. Lmao E. Loop: This lets you specify how many times the animation should repeat itself. Note that some browsers take any value other than 1 to mean 'loop forever'. Therefore, your animation either plays once or forever. F. Style: This controls the type of animation: Rotate 1 rotates all the text as one; Rotate 2 rotates each character. (Buttons have a single Rotate option.) Rotate text/Rotate lights - select whether you want the text to rotate or the lights or both. You cannot rotate the shadow as this would create very large files. Direction - selects the direction of rotation. Swing options: Swing 1 swings all the text as one; Swing 2 swings each character. (Buttons have a single Swing option.) Angle - how much you want the heading to swing. Pulsate options: Pulsate 1 pulsates all the text as one; Pulsate 2 pulsates each character. (Buttons have a single Pulsate option.) Minimum text size - how far back to pulsate the text. Shrink+Grow & Grow+Shrink - only have an effect if you Pause the animation. These options select the starting point for the animation (maximum or minimum.) Fade options: Fade in - the heading emerges from the background color. flash xp FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions For most updated content, visit our website Q: What is FXP? A: FXP is a term adopted by earlier clients which provided site to site FTP transfers. Q: When trying to transfer files from one site to another I keep getting this error 500 illegal port command. A: The FTP Server is set up to not allow or doesn't support FXP. Located in the Site Manager on the Advanced tab, you will find the option "alternative fxp method". By enabling upload/download (depending on the direction of the transfer), you may be able to get the server to allow FXP. Note: It is common for some sites to only allow FXP in one direction and not the other. By enabling alternative fxp method, this problem is sometimes solved. Q: Why do I keep getting this message: "Only client IP address allowed for PORT command" when trying to FXP? A: The FTP Server is set up to block FXP. In most cases using alternative fxp method doesn't solve this problem. Q: I've tried everything but I can't get a site to site transfer to work, what is wrong? A: Site to site transfers are not supported by some software/hardware configurations. Often, this is due to an incompatibility with NAT (Network Address Translation). NAT is not aware of site to site transfers and when it detects you are attempting to transfer a file, it modifies the FTP protocol to match your local "inside" IP. Several users have reported that Microsoft Internet Sharing is not compatible. Q: Why can't I see any files? I can see them in other ftp clients. A: There are two possible reasons. 1. You are behind a firewall and the FTP server is unable to connect to your computer. To resolve this issue you need to use Passive mode. This option is located in Preferences on the Proxy tab. Check "Use Passive mode". 2. The files may be hidden on the ftp server, and in order to see them you need to change the list method. This is located in Preferences on the Options tab. Change the List method to show hidden files. Note: some sites don't allow you to view hidden files and will result in an error. To resolve this problem, go into the Site Manager, select the site and click the advanced tab. Uncheck "show hidden files", then save to keep the changes Q: I can't see the toolbar icons or the icons are messed up. A: This problem happens on Windows 95 systems when the \Windows\System\ComCtl32.dll file is out of date. This DLL is responsible for drawing the toolbar buttons and their images. You can download the latest version from this link: MS Common Control Update! Q: When FXPing why doesn't FlashFXP show a file progress, transfer speed or how much time is remaining? A: The FXP protocol (site to site) doesn't provide any means of measurement. After one file is FXPed, FlashFXP attempts to estimate the remaining time for the next file and total remaining time for all files in the queue. Q: Will FlashFXP ever support connecting to more then 2 sites? A: FlashFXP was designed to provide very easy access and usability to the site to site feature. Allowing more than two would only complicate things. For now let's stick with 2. Q: Why doesn't FlashFXP support Squid? A: FlashFXP v1.3 now supports it. Q: Why doesn't FlashFXP download http:// urls from the clipboard? A: FlashFXP is not a browser or a web download manager. For FlashFXP you need to use the ftp addresses. Q: Is it possible to import site lists from another FTP clients? A: Yes, You can import other site lists into FlashFXP from the Site Manager by right-clicking on the site list and selecting Import from the menu. Q: FlashFXP looks confusing, All I want to do is download and upload files. I don't need site to site transfers.. help!?! A: We have just the thing for you, With a click of the mouse FlashFXP can transform into your normal looking FTP client. From the main menu select View then click FTP Only. You can always uncheck this later to bring back the power of site to site transfers. Q: I use ZipMagic and now all of my zips appear as folders in FlashFXP, how can I make the zips appear as zips? A: You need to make one small change in the ZipMagic Properties window. First, click the Start Menu, then go to Programs|ZipMagic 4.0|ZipMagic Properties. Click the "Zip Folders" button, then click the "Applications" button. Then just add FlashFXP to the list of applications that sees zip files as files. Q: I purchased FlashFXP v1.x-1.3 and my key doesn't work for v1.4-v2.0! A: The key format was changed starting with version 1.4. You will need to email support@flashfxp.com and request a new one. New keys are provided free of charge.

FreeBSD Installation

A step-by-step guide to installing FreeBSD 5. It assumes moderate experience with linux and leaves you with a fully updated FreeBSD system. FreeBSD Installation A. 5.x vs 4.x The first thing to understand about FreeBSD is that there are two lines of development. The -STABLE branch is marked with a 4.x version number and the most recent version is 4.10. It is well tested and very solid, but does not include the most recent technology. The -CURRENT branch, marked with a 5.x version, is the “unstable” branch. However, it is nicely stable at the moment and is coming along quite well. Most users should go with 5.x and these instructions are only valid for that tree. NOTE: DragonFlyBSD ( www.dragonflybsd.org ) is a continuation of the 4.x line. It uses lock-less (no mutexes) SMP support and a Light Weight Kernel Threading system. It has a lot of promise and is developing at a breakneck pace, but it should still be thought of as “R/D.” B. Getting Media I am not going to say much about this. There are links to various ftp mirrors at www.freebsd.org and the directory structure is fairly self-explanatory. There are however several choices for ISO. You should choose the miniinst ISO. It is small and will include everything you need for the base system. C. Starting Installation After, the CD boots up you will enter the...ahh.....majestic sysinstall. You can safely ignore most of the options and just choose a standard installation. Most of the install process is pretty easy and anyone who has some experience with linux or unix will be able to handle it without much stress. However, creating partitions and dealing with drives will seem very odd to your standard linux user. D. Hard Disc Management in FreeBSD Ok, the first thing to get used to here is that IDE drives are not hda, hdb...etc. They are ad0, ad1 and so forth. SCSI discs are da0, da1...and so on. There is one other thing that is going to freak some people out. You create slices, not partitions, on the disc and then create partitions within those slices. For example, the first partition in the first slice on the first IDE disc would be ad0s1a. Just accept it. E. Partitioning Sysinstall will lead you through the partitioning and its fairly easy to understand. The first part will ask you to choose a disc or discs to partition and then will show you a "slice editor." This is where you will create your slice. I advise you to only make one. While multiple slices are easy to deal with, it just adds complication. If this is not your first installation of a BSD type OS, then you can ignore me and why are you reading this again? After creating your slice, you will be prompted to choose the drive(s) to install an MBR on. The FreeBSD boot loader is nothing to write home about, but it tends towards working. After this step, you can create partitions. There is not much to say here. At the top of the screen it will show your slice(s) and when one of them is selected you can use the controls to create a partition on it. You will need at least a root and swap partition. On the non-swap partitions it is usually a good idea to enable soft-updates. F. Distribution Sets This is a simple section, select minimal. G. Continue Installation The rest of this is pretty simple. Make sure you install from the CD and not the Internet. The bulk of the install is now done. After it copies files to your disc, it will start the configuration process. This is all pretty self-evident, but there are a couple things you should know. Network Configuration Don't be scared by the names, in *BSD devices are named after their drivers. There is also a short description after the name, so you should be able to choose the right one. The rest of the network config is easy, just follow the prompts. System Console Configuration You can pretty much ignore this, you may want to look around for your own knowledge and of course you could pick a nice screen saver here, but other then that I would leave it alone for now. Time Zone All I have to say here is that if you live in the US, after you choose “America – North and South” hit the end key. The US is at the bottom of the list and hitting end is the quickest way there. Linux Say no, we will do this later and with an updated linux_base. Mouse OK, welcome to the wonderful and amazing world of moused. Answer the first question truthfully, and then you can tweak the settings in the “Please configure your mouse” dialog. Whatever you do, be sure to enable the daemon. Also, for most users that is all you will have to do. You can safely ignore the other options. Package Installation At this point, the installer will ask you to install binary packages. Say no. These binaries are out of date and not included on our CD. Of users and roots This isn't the most thrilling section, add a user when it asks you to and set a root password after that. The only thing I have to say about this process is when the new user dialog comes up leave the “Group:” box unchanged and add “wheel” to the Member groups. You also might want to set your shell to /bin/tcsh. As for setting the root password, if you can't handle that we have bigger problems. Rebooting Ok, next it will ask if you would like to visit the general config area. Select no and you will be brought back to the main menu. Exit the install, reboot without the CD in and enjoy the boot messages. H. The Real Post-Install At this point, I am going to assume that you are now looking at a login prompt and thinking “my my...FreeBSD boots quite quickly doesn't it.” Well, our task is not done yet...there is a reason we did a minimal install. We are going to do most of it ourselves. First, lets upgrade to -CURRENT. This isn't a practice I would usually recommend, but 5.x is close to being tagged stable and -CURRENT is rather solid at the moment. First, I need to explain how things are done in the BSD world. Sup? CVS up; you up; we all CVSUP. Cvsup is a very interesting program that I am not going to explain in detail here. All you really need to know is that it updates source trees. You see, that is the thing. You may be used to /usr/src not doing much. In BSD it has a job, it holds the source for the entire base system. However, we did a minimal install and no source is there. It wouldn't be up2date anyway. So, lets fix that. Login as root and type the following: pkg_add -r cvsup-without-gui pkg_add is the binary installer for FreeBSD and the -r argument tells it to fetch binaries from the net. It will also fetch any deps that you might need. Switch to another console while this is happening and login as root. Do the following: cd /etc cp /usr/share/examples/etc/make.conf /etc/make.conf cp /usr/share/examples/cvsup/standard-supfile /usr cp /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile /usr chmod u+w /etc/make.conf /usr/standard-supfile /usr/ports-supfile What was that? Well here is the rundown. Make.conf is the file that controls the building of programs from source on FreeBSD and the supfiles tell cvsup where to get the source for the base system and the ports system, also where to put said source. They come out of /usr/share/examples without the write bit set and that gets annoying. So we set that. Now switch back to the first console and type rehash. This tells tcsh to check its path for new programs. Now, edit the standard supfile that is in /usr. You can either use ee or vi. I like vi. Scroll down to the line that looks a bit odd. It will be something like: *default host=CHANGE_THIS.FreeBSD.org The “CHANGE_THIS” is where you put what cvsup server to use. Choose a number between 1 and 9, like 4, and put cvsup4 where CHANGE_THIS is. So it would end up being: *default host=cvsup4.FreeBSD.org Now exit your editor and run cvsup /usr/standard-supfile If everything goes correctly, you will see a lot of text scrolling on the screen. If it says something about a bad connection, try another number. Make.conf Now 'tis the time for all good men (and women) to edit their make.conf . This is not difficult, in fact have a look around the file. It may be long, but it is pretty simple. Now, uncomment the CPU setting and the CFLAGS setting. Set the CPU to your CPU (there will be a list in the comments above the setting) and set the CFLAGS to -O2. (NOTE: If the base system fails to build, downgrade your CFLAGS back to -O). Build Your World When CVSUP finishes (it will be awhile...go get some coffee), cd to /usr/src and run make buildworld. That command will do exactly what it sounds like. It builds your world, or base system. While its doing that, lets get you a kernel. First, cd to /usr/src/sys/i386/conf then cp GENERIC to some file of your choosing. Any name you want. However, be aware that this is going to show up in a uname -a. Now, crack open your new file and take a look at what a FreeBSD kernel config is like. There are many things you can do here that will improve performance and subtract in size. However, lets keep it simple. Near the top of the file will be the name GENERIC. Change that to your new name. You can now look through the file and you will find several sections that are just for debugging. These will indeed add size and slow down the kernel a bit, but I would leave them for now. Go to the end of the file and make a new line. Add the following: device pcm This will add sound support to the kernel. Be aware that you don't need to do this, you can load binary modules at boot or after boot, but this way is easy and sound is used often. Save the file and exit. Go back to your buildworld console and when its done execute make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_CONFIG_NAME NOTE: NOT THE PATH OF THE KERNEL CONFIG..it knows to look in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf Installing Your World This isn't that difficult. First run make installkernel KERNCONF= your config name. Now here is the interesting part. Run mergemaster -p, this program looks through your etc and updates it to match the new /etc in /usr/src. It will display changed files to you, press q and it will give you options. Something like i (install), m (merge) etc. Pick merge and it will open a nice little screen that shows you one file on the right and one on the left. It will go section by section, showing the areas that have changed. Press r or l to choose which section to keep. Its pretty easy to see which section has new stuff and which does not. After the merge, it will prompt you with options for the newly merged file. One of these will be install and this is the one you want. In the latest current, most of what you will be showed is user and group files. Make sure you do select the sections with the new users and groups. After this is done, it will ask you a couple questions that you can say yes to. Now that your /etc is updated run make installworld then reboot. NOTE: You usually don't need to run mergemaster. However, 5.2.1 is a pretty old release and -CURRENT has come a long way. I. Ports Welcome to running current. The rest is easy. cd back to /usr and edit the ports supfile the same way you did the standard one. Run cvsup on it and wait. After its done, you will have a full ports tree. There is not much left to say. You now have a working system and a fully updated one too. To install software from ports cd to /usr/ports/category/softwarename/ and run make install clean . If you want linux binary support, install the linux_base port. To find where it is cd to /usr/ports and run make search name=linux_base | less . Enable loading the kernel modules for linux binary support by editing /etc/rc.conf. Just add the line linux_enable="YES" to the file and your set. If this is a desktop system, I would recommend installing /usr/ports/x11/xorg and your choice of /usr/ports/x11/gnome2 or kde3. Have fun . Get it from: http://www.madpenguin.org/cms/?m=show&id=1853

How to recover MOST of scratched CD data discs

How to recover MOST of scratched CD data discs I learn an old thecnique to how to recover damaged or scratched disks with some lost of data. In this case i have one borrowed game - MAX PAYNE 2 with a chunck of 4 mb lost with a scratch in CD1 Install. Here we cover some special thecniques of how to create a full working CD from the scratched one. First some tools will be needed: 1. Alcohol 120% 2. UltraISO 3. Windows XP/2000 (not tested on 95/98/me) 3. Small piece of cotton 4. Dry cleaner paper 5. Finally, oil for cooking. First step - preparing the CD Get the cotton and drop some water, start cleaning vertically the surface of CD. Do it 3 times and dry the water with a piece of dry cleaner paper. With a new piece of cotton, drop some oil for cooking and start to wet the surface like you are washing the CD with the oil. Dry carefully now. Some particles of oil will stay on the microsurface of the scrath. It's okay. Seems the oil helps the laser of the CD/DVD driver to read the surface again. Sure this will work with small unreadable scratchs - some hard scratchs loose parts of the surface of the CD where we have data and it's lost forever. But if it is loosed try anyway. Whith this tip 80% of the small scratched CD's coud be recovered. Second Step - testing the CD With Alcohol 120% make an ISO - image making wizard - and lets see if the app can read the loosed surface. In my case Alcohol 120% had recovered 60% of the data. This is not enough. Have tryed other appz, they do not recover all the data. But the CD/DVD driver laser CAN recover all data in this case. the data is still there, what we do? third step - making the new CD With the main copy system of windows explorer you can do it. Just create one folder with the same name of the CD label for future burn reference, and copy the CD content to the folder. When the CD copy process find the scratch, in majority of the cases, it's slow down the reading and will recover ALL loosed data.If not, it just tell you there's an unreadable sector. In this case your CD is lost. But it's not my case, finally windows explorer got all the data from the scratch and made a copy in the folder. with the ultraISO, wrote the original CD label, drop the content of the folder and save as Iso. You can Test the new CD just mounting the iso in the Alcohol 120%. In my case i did ISO of the two discs from MAX PAYNE 2 and tested installing from the mounted ISO. Works like a charm. I got the 4 mb lost again. So, I have burned the CD and now i have a working copy from the scratched one. Sounds too bizzarre, but works. Course you can jump the cleaning process and try to copy the content with Windows explorer. But in my case did not work without oil...

How to speed Up HTTP Requests On Internet Explorer

How to speed Up HTTP Requests On Internet Explorer To comply with current Internet standards, Internet Explorer limits the number of simultaneous downloads to two downloads, plus one queued download. This configuration is a function of the browser. However, as connection speeds increase, and the number of total connections that are allowed to Internet servers increase, the two-connection limit may be restrictive. Please Note: Changing the maximum number of connections beyond two is a violation of Internet standards; use at your own risk! To increase the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed, follow these steps: 1. Start the Registry Editor 2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings 3. Select New > DWORD Value from the Edit menu 4. Name the new value MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server 5. Right-click the MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server value and choose Modify 6. Under Base, click the radio button next to Decimal 7. Harness the power of Hybrid graphics

While AMD and Nvidia are battling it out to produce the most powerful (and affordable) graphics solution, there’s a lot of action happening in the motherboard chipset segment as well. It’s been quite a long time since we have seen any new IGP chipsets. The last ones that we saw were the RS780 from AMD and MCP73 from Nvidia. These chipsets were path-breaking in terms of power and the ability to decode high-definition video seamlessly. However, the RS780 had an edge over the MCP73 as it could support hybrid graphics. At present, both the Red and Green teams have a raft of new IGP chipsets supporting hybrid graphics for enthusiasts and mainstream users. And all of these launched in the past two months!

We tested hybrid solutions by AMD and Nvidia and arrived at some very interesting results. Let’s begin with the basics of hybrid graphics.

What is hybrid graphics?

Hybrid graphics is a technology that allows combining the power of the integrated graphics processor (IGP) and a discrete graphics processor for boosting the graphics performance. You simply need to add a graphics card to an IGP motherboard and configure it in hybrid graphics mode.

Do you need a compatible motherboard and graphics card for hybrid graphics?

Yes, you need a compatible motherboard and graphics card for hybrid graphics. At present only Nvidia and AMD have hybrid graphics solutions. However these solutions are only present for the AMD platform. Intel users will have to wait for a month or two until Nvidia rolls out the GeForce 9000 series IGP motherboards supporting the entire range of Intel processors in the LGA775 package.

Both AMD and Nvidia have a couple of options for hybrid graphics. If you’re a fan of AMD you can choose between the 780G and 790GX chipsets depending on the nature of your application. While the former is an entry level solution featuring the Radeon HD 3200 GPU, the latter features the Radeon HD 3300 GPU and is targeted towards gamers and enthusiasts with advanced features such as dual PCI express slots. You can combine these chipsets with Radeon HD 3450, HD 3470 or HD 3650 in Hybrid CrossFire X mode

.

Nvidia has a two-pronged approach to hybrid graphics—GeForce Boost and Hybrid Power. If you install a GeForce 8400GS or a GeForce 8500GT on a Hybrid SLI-compatible motherboard, you can combine the power of the integrated and discrete GPUs using the GeForce Boost feature. Alternatively you can use the two GPUs individually for a dual-monitor setup. Nvidia’s Hybrid power technology allows switching off the discrete graphics processor when the processing power is not required. The task is then offloaded to the integrated GPU. For instance, it makes sense to switch over to the integrated GPU while using office applications or surfing the Internet. See the table for Nvidia’s hybrid SLI-compatible hardware.

Why is hybrid graphics not supported with mid-range and high-end discrete GPUs?

If you notice carefully, AMD and Nvidia have added hybrid graphics compatibility only for entry-level GPUs—mid-range and high-end GPUs are absent from the list. This is because it doesn’t make sense getting a meagre performance boost by running mid-range and high-end GPUs in hybrid mode. In fact Nvidia’s implementation of Hybrid Power for high-end GPUs is a clever move.

Why should you opt for a hybrid graphics-capable motherboard?

IGP motherboards cost anywhere between Rs 3,000 for an entry level performer to Rs 5,500 for a mid-range board. Hybrid graphics-capable motherboards don’t carry a special price tag, except that the price range starts at around Rs 4,000 for which you can get a decent board based on AMD 780 G. Though you can get a good non-hybrid motherboard for less, support for hybrid graphics gives you the option to upgrade in the future plus a more powerful onboard GPU. Hybrid graphics also eliminates the need for a more expensive graphics card with dual-link DVI video output for multi-monitor setup.

How to enable hybrid graphics?

On detecting a compatible graphics card the Nvidia Forceware driver automatically displays an additional icon for GeForce Boost in the system tray. You can choose between enabling the integrated and discrete GPUs in SLI mode or running them individually in multi-monitor mode. For enabling Hybrid CrossFire X you have to enable the CrossFire option in the ATI Catalyst Control Center after installing the graphics card. You also have to make sure that the hybrid graphics mode is enabled in the BIOS.

Is there a hybrid solution for laptops?

Nvidia’s new GeForce 9000 series mobile GPUs feature support for hybrid graphics. Hybrid SLI-enabled laptops allow users to switch between the discrete GPU and the integrated GPU. Thus the battery life can be extended by switching over to the integrated GPU when using applications such as word processing and email which don’t require the power of the discrete GPU. Currently there are 12 GPUs in the GeForce 9000 series that support this feature, out of which three also support GeForce Boost.

Performance

Out of the three hybrid graphics setups that we tested, GeForce 8400 GS showed the best scaling. Surprisingly the performance of the 8500 GT dropped slightly in hybrid mode. The Radeon HD 3450 spewed only a few extra frames per second in Hybrid CrossFire. Check out the scores!

View TV shows on the Net

The idiot box is on its way out and the information box is taking its place. TV tuner cards have been in the market for more than a decade, and have been the first in a line of products that aim to convert the home PC into the home entertainment system. Lately, manufacturers have released media extenders to play and record TV via an external box, connected to the central computer over a home network. Of course, downloading TV shows, movies and various video files has always been in vogue, and we don’t anticipate it going out of style any time soon. But, there is a new player in the field of watching TV on your computer, and that is video streaming.

The main advantage that streaming video has over downloading video, is the time factor. When a user downloads a video file, he inevitably has to wait until a certain portion of the file has been downloaded before he can preview and check the quality of the file. With streaming online videos on the other hand, he knows instantly how good it is, and if it is in the language he understands. Additionally, downloading a typical movie will occupy at least 700 MB on his hard disk, whereas the memory occupied by streaming videos is cleared once he leaves that Web page.

According to Dan Morrell of Slate (www.slate.com/id/2178343), in the early stages YouTube and Google Video were chock-full of movies and episodes, which were later removed after some legal action was initiated by Hollywood studios against them. How is the Indian viewer affected by this? Not too much, since YouTube (in.youtube.com) still has users who upload episodes of popular Hindi TV shows, for instance, ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, a few hours after it airs on Star Plus.

It is interesting to note that the industry has tackled TV show piracy using this method differently than they did for downloading. American audiences have Hulu (www.hulu.com), a website that was started by NBC and News Corp. It has a catalog of every TV show and movie produced under their banner which they can watch. The obvious upside to this is that it’s perfectly legal and the viewer doesn’t have to worry about breaking any laws, and the quality is superb. Note, only those users with an IP address originating in the United States can watch videos on Hulu.

So, does any Indian channel offer this kind of service? Well, sort of. If you browse to the home page of a channel, there are uploaded video clips of recent episodes of popular shows, mainly reality TV, but not whole episodes. Network18’s latest venture In.com (www.in.com) does offer Live TV for the news channels CNBC, CNN-IBN and IBN, and full episodes of ‘Bigg Boss2’ (biggboss2.in.com), but these are far and few between (CHIP is a member of the Network18 family).

The other options available to viewers of ‘desi’ TV lie on the other side of the fence. The most popular of these is powered by ApniCommunity (www.muft.tv), the reason for its popularity being that they are prompt, decent quality, and most importantly a free service. Some other services that provide Indian TV content are iDesiTV (www.idesitv.com) and YuppTV (www.yupptv.com), which both come at an affordable price. These two services lie in a murky grey area, with users not quite sure about the legality. Of course, those who don’t care about the law can frequent websites that provide unauthorized online streaming content, for instance, 66Stage (http://66stage.com) which has an awesome compilation of links for movies, TV shows, documentaries and cartoons. Most of the content on this website is linked from respectable online video services such as Veoh (www.veoh.com), and Google Video (video.google.com).

So, now you know where to go and watch TV streamed from the Web on your PC. Now, how about recording it? With the programs provided on this month’s CHIP DVD, you can convert your PC wholly into a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) with timer controls for starting and stopping recordings. The best part about all this is that you don’t need to shell out for a TV tuner card. Also included are some rad tools for editing and archiving your video files in a library.

Tapping portals

The Internet is swarming with awesome videos and exciting video clips. Most of them are available on YouTube; however there are a plethora of websites, portals and tools which offer entertainment for an entire evening. We show how to access the best broadcasting channels and how to download your favorite TV shows to your computer.

Downloading Clips: YouTube is the biggest video portal, but it is not the best. Some quick and useful functions, for instance, a direct download link, are missing. But you can correct these oversights by switching to the Web browser Firefox and loading it with the Greasemonky plug-in. Greasemonkey is a powerful tool with which you can integrate more tools and optimize websites to suit your own needs. This is installed like any other add-on. Browse to the official Firefox add-ons Web page (addons.mozilla.org), input ‘Greasemonkey in the search field, and download and install the XPI file. Alternatively, you may open the ‘Add-ons’ window from ‘Tools | Add-ons’ and enter the phrase in the ‘Get Add-ons’ tab. Next, browse to the website www.userscripts.org to get scripts to incorporate into Greasemonkey. Pick and choose the snippets you need, we shall focus on those that aid in online video streaming. First up are the YouTube extensions, the most popular of which is ‘YouTube Blackout’. Just press the ‘Install this script’ button on the Web page, to enhance your YouTube watching experience, as this script blacks out the rest of the YouTube Web page when you are watching a video. So next time, instead of viewing clips on the website, click on the ‘Blackout’ link that appears with each video after the installation of the plug-in. The video opens in a pop-up window with a semi-transparent background, called ‘Lightbox’. Elements like ‘Related Videos’ appear darkened and do not distract the viewer anymore.

Another handy script is ‘YouTube Enhancer’. It adds a link below every video, from which you can directly download the clip to your computer in the form of a Flash video. It has its drawbacks though—you have to redefine the video and add the FLV extension, otherwise Windows does not correctly identify the video and fails to play it. Using this handy script, you can successfully downloaded the clips onto your PC.

Recording TV: Now that you have streaming television content playing on the computer, it is time to set up your video recorder to tape those shows you don’t want to miss. While it is impossible to connect your VCR to the PC without a card in between, here is a way to record TV shows.

CamStudio, a screen capturing tool, is great in this scenario, since it comes with a tool to record the monitor into a Flash (SWF) or AVI file. The XP codec packet should be installed for good results during the recording. Although CamStudio comes with its own codec, you will get much better results with the ffdshow video codec installed on your PC.

After the installation of the ffdshow codec, you need to set CamStudio to use it. In the main application window, go to ‘Options | Video Options | Compressor’. Set the quality of the compressor on ‘100’. Advanced users can further tweak the recording settings in ‘Configure’.

Now open up the Web page, for instance, ‘Bigg Boss2’ in your Web browser, select an episode and hit the play button to start the buffering process. Switch to the CamStudio application, and select ‘Region | Region’ and press ‘Record’—the cursor now appears as a cross-wire. Draw a rectangle around the video screen and the recording starts automatically. Do not forget—you should not scroll down the Web page since this will shift the video player and the recording will be faulty since CamStudio records only the predefined area. Once the transmission is done, save the AVI or SWF file to your computer.

Viewing Clips: CamStudio automatically starts its built-in player at the end of each recording session. However this player does not support all formats. In such a case, the quintessential media player comes to the user’s rescue. We are, talking about the VLC media player.

Timer recording

In order to record, say ‘CNBC’, when you are not at home, use our recommended video recorder applications. Once installed, you can save yourself the complicated programming codes to start and stop recordings of the broadcast shows without any difficulty. For this purpose you require following tools from this month’s CHIP DVD—Z-Cron which will act as the timer control unit, the small tool Sendkey and CamStudio. You will also need to create a Batch file (BAT) to program CamStudio for recording purposes. We have step by step instructions on how to go about all this. We shall also demonstrate how to set up and configure separate programs.

Recorder Setup: The Sendkey tool is required so that the Batch file, which we attach later, also functions. The installation is supposedly easy: Copy the _sendkey.exe_ file from this issue’s CHIP DVD to the ‘C:WindowsSystem32’ folder.

Now, to move on to the next step, this involves starting the CamStudio program with a Batch file and automatically activating the recording function.

Open up Notepad from ‘Start | Run | notepad.exe’ and create a file called ‘AutoStart.bat’ and insert the following:

start Recorder.exe

Sendkey *5000

Sendkey 8

The file, when run, opens CamStudio (Recorder.exe) and simulates it 5 seconds later by pressing the ‘8’ key. We will configure CamStudio such that the recording starts with it. Copy the Batch file to CamStudio’s program installation folder, probably ‘C:Program FilesCamStudio’. Create a new Batch file ‘AutoStop.bat’ and append the following code to the file in order to stop the recording if the film is over:

Sendkey 9

The Z-Cron tool is the timer control device for your video recorder. Click on ‘Task’, and ‘Label’ it as ‘CNBC’ for instance. Check the ‘Activate task’ option and load the ‘AutoStart.bat’ batch file by entering the folder path in the Batchfile field, for instance, ‘C:Program FilesCamStudioAutoStart.bat’.

Note: Check the option ‘Display hidden files and folders’ in the Folder Option window in Windows Explorer, otherwise the BAT files will not be visible.

Now switch to the ‘Scheduler’ tab and specify the start time by pressing the ‘Scheduler’ button. Start the recording for the 20:15 show ahead by five minutes, say, 20:10. Under ‘Settings for period: Weekday’ select Sunday and press ‘Save’.

To configure CamStudio to stop the recording, if the show is over, create a new job and name it ‘Stop recording ‘. As described above, load the ‘AutoStop.bat’ batch file in Z-Cron, and to be on the safe side, set the end time an extra five minutes after the scheduled end time, so that you don’t miss any vital part of the show. Save the file again and perform a test run to confirm whether the task functions properly. To do this, right click on the task label ‘CNBC’ and select ‘Start’ from the context menu—this should open up CamStudio.

Now, open up the CNBC Web page on the In.com website. Define the area of the video player as the default recording area that CamStudio records. Be careful not to displace the Web browser since the recording area is predefined.

Finally, we'll make some minor setting changes to the CamStudio screen capturing tool. Go to ‘Options | Keyboard Shortcuts ‘and set the character ‘8’ as the ‘Record/Pause Key’ and ‘9’ as ‘Stop Key’. The best option would be to allocate the remaining shortcuts with [F1] to [F4] function keys. Now, define the area, which should be recorded by CamStudio, by going to ‘Region | Fixed Region’. Activate the ‘Fixed Top-Left Corner’ option and specify the screen area with ‘Select’ and the measuring tool that opens later. Check the option ‘Drag Corners to Pan’ and save your settings and exit the Region window by pressing ‘OK’.

Testing Recorder: To make sure that everything is functioning, close the CamStudio program, open up the video on your Web browser and start the task ‘CNBC’ in Z-Cron by right clicking and select ‘Start’. Now, the recording should start shortly. Stop the recording with ‘AutoStop.bat’ and save the recorded video file on the desktop.

Editing videos

Advertisements are annoying and even those few minutes when the recording started too early are unnecessary.

With the freeware application VirtualDub, you can simply cut out all the excess material that isn’t needed in the recorded file. This saves memory space and also a lot of bother. Drag and drop the video in to the VirtualDub window. Using ‘Edit | Set selection start’ define the starting point and the end point of the commercial break or the lead time with ‘Set selection end’. Then, press the [Delete] key so that the extracted portion ends up in the Recycle Bin. Now repeat the procedure to relieve the video of all unnecessary frames.

To tweak the video, go to ‘Video | Filters | Add’, for instance to increase or decrease the brightness and the contrast of the video, or to resharpen the frames or superimpose a custom logo.

In case you have not used any filters, activate ‘Video | Direct Stream Copy’, to export the film. In this way you spare yourself complex conversion. However if you have already edited the picture quality, ‘Video | Full processing mode’ must be set. At last export the file with ‘File | Save as AVI’. The film appears better than an AVI file on your computer and you can watch it again, anytime you want.

TIP: Find more useful filters on the website www.neuron2.net, which can be integrated into VirtualDub from ‘Video | Filters | Add | Load’. The changes in the clip are apparent after clicking ‘OK’ in the right preview video of the desktop. Then decide whether to apply them or not.

Archiving content

In this last section we show how you can at a later stage structurally archive the saved videos. Now that you have a bunch of videos, using the procedures outlined in this article, you will need to catalog them. The MyMDb (www.mymdb.de) archive tool helps you to avoid duplication and to always have your collection ready at hand. Simply enter the title, and the program starts searching in the online Film databank under www.imdb.com for information like cast, crew, studio and trivia information.
